What are Card games?

A card game is any type of game that is played with one or more decks of playing cards. The deck can be made up of traditional playing cards, as with most Solitaire games for instance. Some card games use a game-specific deck of cards. These are cards that have been specially designed for a particular game, such as Uno Online or Phase 10.

Single-player card games

Card games such as FreeCell and other Solitaire games are usually played by one player. The objective is usually to sort the cards in a particular order. The cards are laid out in a pre-determined arrangement called a tableau. Players can move the cards by adding them to the tableau, moving them to the foundation piles, or placing them on a discard pile. The objective is usually to clear the entire tableau while abiding by a set of rules that restrict the ways in which the player is allowed to move the cards.

Casino-style card games

Casino-style card games are gambling games in which a wager is made on the outcome of the game. Casino games include all of the card games in the Poker games family, in which the players play against one another, as well as card games like Blackjack in which the player’s main focus is to beat the dealer.

Trick-taking games

In trick-taking games, players choose a single card from their hand to play each round. Based on the values of the cards played, one player will end up “winning” the cards laid on the table during that round. In games such as Klaverjas, the player’s aim is to accumulate a certain number of points. However, in other trick-taking games, such as Hearts, the objective is to avoid taking any cards that carry a points value, and forcing one’s opponents to “win” these cards instead.

Shedding games

In shedding games, all the players are given a certain number of cards. The player who can get rid of their cards first wins the game. This category of card games includes games such as Crazy Eights and Uno, but matching games such as Rummikub also fit this category.

Melding games

Melding games are games in which the player must either clear away a tableau or get rid of all the cards in their hand by matching them up to create melds or sets. Mahjong is a good example of a tile-based melding game, and card games include Go Fish and Rummy.
